Comeback Volvo 240? This is the Volvo 240R!

March 31, 2025

Solid workout

In the spirit of the original design study, the Volvo 240R combines the unmistakable blocky shape of the old 200 series with modern styling. The R version introduces a sporty bodykit: think deeper bumpers, sideskirts, a subtle diffuser and a ducktail spoiler. It’s as if the Volvo 240 has had a tough work-out, but still managed to retain its classic personality.

Also interior designed

But the Volvo 240R is not just about looking fast on the outside: Rubinstein-Towler has also done some work on the interior. Highlights include blue upholstery that adds a splash of color to the retro-inspired bucket seats, along with a fresh new steering wheel design. The digital cockpit keeps it minimalist with a few smaller displays, combined with physical controls to retain that tactile feel on the center console.

Fully electric?

If this car ever goes into production, what will power this modern interpretation of the classic “brick”? Since the modern reinvention of the Volvo 240 is an electric vehicle, one would expect that the (fictional) 240R would also run on an emission-free powertrain.

Volvo ES90 as a base?

A quick look in the parts bin of Geely, Volvo’s parent company, shows that a high-performance electric car is within reach. Take, for example, the Twin Motor Performance version of the new Volvo ES90; it produces a combined output of 680 hp (500 kW). That’s more than enough power for both a sedan and a high-performance station wagon.
