Charging pole at the campsite? You’re best (and worst) off in these European vacation countries

June 24, 2025

Catch up

ACSI annually inspects some 10,000 campsites in Europe and since 2022 has paid extra attention to the presence of charging facilities. A charging station now appears to be a decisive factor for many vacationers to choose a particular campsite. There is good news: at the beginning of June 2025, Europe had exactly 2,000 campsites with one or more charging stations, according to ACSI. This is a substantial growth compared to the beginning of 2023, when there were 714. So in just over two years, the supply has almost tripled.

Not charging at your own place

The rise of charging stations at campgrounds was not born out of hospitality alone. Campgrounds increasingly had to deal with vacationers who secretly hooked up their cars to their pitch’s power pole. Nice for the camper’s wallet, less nice for the campsite’s power grid. The result? A ban on charging at regular power points and the emergence of charging stations at campgrounds.

Dutch campsites in the lead

With a charging station density of 36.1%, the Netherlands leads the European list. Of the 1,066 campsites that ACSI looked at in our country, 385 offer a charging point. In absolute numbers, this makes the Netherlands even number two in Europe, behind France. The popular vacation country has 509 campsites with charging facilities, but out of a total of 2,758, the French percentage does not exceed 18.5%. Other notable names in the top five are Luxembourg (34.3%), Norway (32.9%), Belgium (31.9%) and Croatia (30.4%).

Percentage of campsites with electric car charging stations:

1. Netherlands 36,1%
2. Luxembourg 34,3%
3. Norway 32,9%
4. Belgium 31,9%
5. Croatia 30,4%
6. Sweden 27,0%
7. Denmark 25,5%
8. Austria 24,8%
9. Italy 24,3%
10. Slovenia 24,2%
11. Spain 21,6%
12. France 18,5%
13. Switzerland 16,6%
14. United Kingdom 15,9%
15. Germany 15,4%

Germany lags a bit behind

Germany scores remarkably low with only 15.4% of campsites equipped with a charging station. Yet electric drivers on their way to a campsite in our eastern neighbors need not worry. The charging infrastructure along German freeways is quite good. In France too, by the way, as you can see in the video below:
