Car with skibox: what to look out for?

December 31, 2024

The history of the ski box

The ski box is a typical product that grew out of the need to create extra luggage space. In the 1950s and 1960s, people increasingly went on car vacations. This led to creative solutions such as wooden boxes on the roof. These boxes were heavy, poorly streamlined and not particularly safe.

In the 1970s, Swedish manufacturer Thule developed the first aerodynamic ski box made of plastic. This was a revolution: lighter, more efficient and more resistant to the elements. Today, it is impossible to imagine winter sports enthusiasts and people who simply want to carry a large amount of luggage without the ski box.

How big is a ski box?

The size of a ski box depends greatly on the model and application, but on average a ski box has a length between 175 and 215 cm, a width of about 70 to 80 cm, and a height of 30 to 45 cm. In terms of capacity, the most common sizes are between 300 and 500 liters. Smaller models are ideal for short skis or luggage, while larger variants offer space for long skis and more luggage. You can choose a compact version with a capacity of 320 liters, suitable for 4 to 6 pairs of skis. But if you need more space, there is also a larger 600-liter variant that can hold up to 10 pairs of skis.

Tips for using a ski box

A ski box may seem simple, but there are many things to consider. Here are some important tips:

1. Choose the right ski box for your car

Not every ski box fits every car. Consider the length, width and weight of the box. Do you have a small car? Then choose a compact version. For larger cars, consider a wider or longer box.

2. Check the maximum roof weight

Each car has a maximum roof load. This is the total weight of the ski box, including its contents and roof racks. Consult your car’s instruction booklet to avoid going over this weight.

3. Pack like a pro

Make sure heavy items are at the bottom of the ski box and distribute the weight evenly. This prevents the car from becoming unstable at high speeds. Use straps to secure the contents securely.

4. Watch your speed

Having a skibox on the roof changes your car’s aerodynamics. This affects fuel economy and driving stability. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended speed limit, often around 120 km/h.

5. Keep in mind the height

A ski box makes your car a lot taller. This can be problematic in parking garages, toll booths or low overpasses. Measure the total height of your car including the box to avoid surprises.

Points to consider when using a ski box

In addition to the practical tips, here are a few points of interest to ensure the safety and efficiency of your ski box:

1. Weather conditions

Ski boxes are designed to withstand snow, rain and wind. Still, it is important to regularly check that the box is properly closed. During heavy snowfall, it may be helpful to use a cover.

2. Regular maintenance

Check the latches, lock and hinges of your ski box regularly. This will prevent problems during your trip.

3. Security against theft

Many ski boxes have a lock. Always use this and consider an additional lock or cable for extra security, especially if you keep valuables in the box.

Roof racks, you can’t live without them

A ski box is nothing without sturdy roof racks. These are the rods you mount on the roof of your car that the box attaches to. Here are a few things to look out for when choosing roof racks:

1. Compatibility

Not all roof racks fit on every car. Please check if the roof racks are suitable for your type of car and roof (e.g. with or without roof rails).

2. Quality

Cheap roof racks may seem attractive, but they are often less sturdy. Choose a brand known for quality and safety, such as Thule or Yakima.

3. Assembly

Always follow the manufacturer’s mounting instructions. Roof racks must be securely fastened to prevent loosening while driving.

4. Weight limit

Pay attention to the maximum load. The roof racks themselves have a limit, and together with the ski box and contents, this should not exceed your car’s maximum.

Carefree on the road

With a properly mounted ski box and sturdy roof racks, you can hit the road carefree. Whether you’re heading to the mountains for a winter sports vacation or planning a summer road trip, the extra space is a godsend.
