Car sales September: Electric cars also less popular in the Netherlands?

October 2, 2024

Electric car sales continue to grow

In many neighboring countries, sales of electric cars have fallen sharply, but in the Netherlands, EVs remain popular.
In September 2024, 12,461 all-electric vehicles were registered, up 20.6% from the same month last year.
So far this year, 90,266 new electric cars have hit the road, a growth of 6.2%.
The hybrid car also remains as popular as ever, with a 43.4% market share in the first three quarters of 2024.

Cautious recovery in September

After three quarters, car sales in the Netherlands in 2024 lag behind last year, falling 2.8% from the same period in 2023.
So far this year, 278,529 new cars have been registered, a sizeable decline.
After months of decline, total car sales seem to recover somewhat in September, with a 5.1% increase over last year.
This is the first positive result since February.

Popular brands and models

Tesla was again the best-selling car brand in the Netherlands in September 2024, with 3,884 registrations and a 12.4% market share.
Other popular brands were Volkswagen, Kia, Skoda and BMW.
Among models, the Tesla Model Y topped the list, followed by the Tesla Model 3 and the Volkswagen Polo.

Shift

The shift from traditional fuels to electric and hybrid powertrains continues.
In September, nearly 40% of all new cars were fully electric, and hybrids also did well with a 39.3% market share.
The share of gasoline cars fell to 19.6%, while diesel and LPG still have a very small market share.
