Buying your first motorcycle
What should you pay attention to when purchasing?
Before buying your first motorcycle, there are a number of considerations you can take into account. We give you some tips:
- Determine your needs: Consider what you need. Are you a beginner or already have some experience? Think about the type of driving you plan to do. Want a motorcycle for commuting, highway cruising or off-road adventures? Once you have your needs clear, you can start looking for a suitable motorcycle.
- Choose an appropriate displacement: Displacement affects engine power and overall driving experience. For beginners, it is usually recommended to start with a modest displacement, between 250cc and 500cc, to have a manageable start. Do you have more experience? Then you can get an engine with a larger displacement.
- Take a test drive: Take time to test drive different models before making a decision. A test ride will give you a sense of how the bike feels and if it is comfortable for your build. That way you can choose an engine that suits you.
- Consult experienced riders: Talk to experienced motorcyclists to gain insight into different models and brands. They can share valuable advice based on their own experiences. And can help you buy your first motorcycle.
- Look for the right insurance for your motorcycle: There are many motorcycle insurance policies, but not every insurance policy fits every motorcycle. So be well informed about the different motorcycle insurance policies before buying a motorcycle.
Financing options
A new engine costs on average €10,000, but this can reach tens of thousands of euros for luxury models. So before you buy a motorcycle, make sure you have a good understanding of your financial situation. Perhaps you have been saving for this purchase for years or you can borrow money for a motorcycle. So new engines are expensive. And as a beginner, the chances of minor damage while learning are high. Therefore, consider used engines as well. These are often more affordable and any depreciation has often already occurred. Do pay attention to maintenance costs. See what maintenance the engine has had in the past and make an estimate for the future. Includes the price of spare parts and labor for repairs. An engine that seems affordable can become expensive to maintain. Also look carefully at the condition of the engine. Watch for wear and tear, any accidents or repairs.
That way you can be well prepared to look for your dream bike!
