BREAK: Nissan CEO departs – Will merger with Honda be back on the table?

March 11, 2025

Old plans or fresh start?

Uchida’s departure is not entirely out of the blue. Nissan has not had it easy in recent years. Financial challenges, a difficult relationship with Renault and a flirtation with Honda that seemed promising last year, but ultimately foundered on the details. Uchida was not in favor of a partnership with Honda and kept his foot firmly in the door. That he is leaving now, therefore, seems no coincidence. His successor – Ivan Espinosa – may well have a different outlook.

Broom through the top

Not only is Uchida leaving; top executives such as Kunio Nakaguro (chief technology officer) and Hideyuki Sakamoto (chief monozukuri officer) are also stepping down. This dance of chairs in management seems a clear signal that Nissan is ready for sweeping changes.

Honda

A collaboration with Honda would not be crazy on paper. Both brands are already working together on electric cars, and joining forces would allow them to compete better. But a full merger is sensitive – both brands have their own identity and pride. Especially in Japan, the latter is a thing. Espinosa will officially take over on April 1.
