Beware of fines: Zero-emission zones in major cities in effect from next week
What are zero-emission zones?
In more and more cities you will find so-called zero-emission zones. These are areas where you are welcome with a van or truck only if you emit little or no harmful substances. Think of electric vehicles, modern vans or hydrogen-powered trucks. Municipalities are introducing these zones to make the air cleaner and keep the city healthier. The measure applies only to polluting vans and trucks. Passenger cars are not covered (for now). Modern diesel vans are also still allowed to enter, if the van falls into the appropriate emission class.
Fines from July 1
Although the zones went into effect earlier this year, enforcement was lacking in the first few months. Municipalities gave business owners time to adjust. That period is now over: starting July 1, they will start handing out fines.
Anyone who enters an emission-free zone with a non-compliant vehicle without a valid exemption will automatically be fined. This is determined based on the license plate via automatic license plate registration. The exact fine amount varies by municipality. Municipalities want to prevent companies from continuing to ignore the rules.
Municipalities participating
Zero-emission zones are now in effect in places such as:
- Amsterdam
- Rotterdam
- The Hague
- Utrecht
- Maastricht
- Zwolle
- Gouda
- Amersfoort
- Tilburg
In the coming years, more cities will join this policy.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes, a waiver is possible in some cases. For example:
- If the vehicle is used exclusively privately and not for business;
- If the vehicle is adapted for a driver or passenger with a disability, with at least 500 euros in adaptations.
