In January 2023, 32,845 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands, up 6.5 percent from the same month last year. In January 2022, it was 30,848 cars.
“Although the automotive industry still faces supply problems due to global shortages of computer chips and other components, an initial recovery seems to be in sight,” RAI Association said in a comment.
Forecast 2023
About 340,000 new cars are expected to receive license plates during 2023. “That expectation is based on signals from car dealers and manufacturers that order books are well filled and deliveries are picking up,” adds RAI Association. Below is an overview of the most frequently registered trademarks in January 2023:
- Volkswagen (4,086 registrations with 12.4 percent market share)
- Toyota (2,369/7.2%)
- Skoda (2,197/6.7%)
- Kia (2,124/6.5%)
- Peugeot (1,827/5.6%)

Much more striking is the top five most registered models in January 2023. Indeed, there the Volkswagen T-Roc is in first place with 870 registrations, followed by the Peugeot 208 (848 units) and the Volkswagen Polo (827 units). The entire top five looks like this:
