Best compact city cars of 2025
What should a good city car meet?
What makes a city car really good, besides the fact that they sometimes have a cute and extremely cuddly appearance? A city car must, of course, be especially compact. The smaller the turning radius, the easier it is to maneuver through narrow, crowded streets, crowded and cramped parking lots, and into parking garages and their narrow spaces. Seating comfort and ergonomics are also important, so that in addition to the steering wheel and pedals, the driver can easily and effectively operate all other functions of the car. Good all-round visibility is essential, especially for optimal assessment of a variety of traffic situations. Finally, low energy or fuel consumption is important, as are low fixed costs.
If your favorite compact city car is also equipped with driving assistance systems such as parking sensors, a rearview camera and blind spot warning, then driving through the busy city becomes even more relaxing. Connectivity plays an increasingly important role: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a fast-functioning infotainment system come in handy when navigating through, say, a neighborhood still unknown to you.
The best drive for a city car
You can still choose from several powertrains: all-electric, full or plug-in hybrid and a fuel engine – nowadays mostly mild hybrid.
Pure electric driving has many advantages in the city. EVs are very quiet, emit no exhaust fumes and the electric motor instantly delivers maximum torque at low speed, making them perfect for slow-moving and constantly stopped traffic. Moreover, electric cars are allowed in environmental zones, where older diesel models are not welcome.
Full hybrids are an alternative for longer distances, if, for example, you also drive outside the city but still want lower consumption. Full hybrids charge themselves while driving and can also drive short distances purely electrically. There are no plug-in hybrids for city cars; that form of drive is found only in larger segments.
However, a modern gasoline-powered car can still be attractive for those who do not own a private charging station or do not have a public charging station nearby. In that case, opt for a small, fuel-efficient engine, preferably a mild hybrid for added efficiency.

Kia Picanto
The Kia Picanto is still one of the most popular city cars and technically related to the Hyundai i10. With engines up to 62 kW (84 hp), it is economical, affordable to run and surprisingly spacious. Its new design gives it a fresh look.
Mini Cooper Electric
This city car is not as small as the original Mini, but it too offers driving pleasure in a compact package. The retro interior features modern technologies that make every drive comfortable.
Opel Corsa Electric and Peugeot e-208

With 115 kW (156 hp) of power and a range of up to about 400 kilometers, it is also suitable for longer trips. They are slightly larger than most city cars, but compact and agile enough for daily use in the city.
Toyota Aygo X
The first full hybrid in its segment, the Toyota Aygo X Hybrid combines the size of a city car with a tough crossover design. With its 85 kW (115 hp) 1.0-liter full hybrid gasoline engine, it is light – though slightly less light than the non-hybrid version – and agile. The high seating position gives good visibility, while the compact dimensions make parking easy.
Newcomer: Renault Twingo E-tech Electric
A promising newcomer will be the new electric Renault Twingo. With all-electric drive and a design very reminiscent of the original Twingo, with a flexible luggage space due to the sliding rear seat. Thanks to production in Slovenia, the electric Twingo would become very affordable.

Alternative to city car: microcars even more compact, even more agile
Those who want to drive really small and are not concerned about possible associations with mopeds and disabled cars can also opt for a microcar. These tiny vehicles are ideal for busy city centers, but have limitations in speed and comfort.
The Microlino is a retro-bubble electric model with 12.5 kW (17 hp) of power. Perfect for short trips and parking in the smallest spaces. The triplets Opel Rocks, Fiat Topolino and Citroën Ami share the electric powertrain of 6 kW (8 hp) and a top speed of 45 km/h. They fall into the light four-wheeler category and are accessible from the age of 16 with a moped license.
