All about the Nissan R32 EV: an electric GT-R
Nissan R32 EV project
The Nissan R32 EV project was led by Ryozo Hiraku, an experienced Nissan engineer and former owner of an R32 Skyline. He wanted to maintain the appeal of the R32 GT-R while making the car fit for the future. Hiraku wondered if owners of this particular car would still be able to buy and enjoy gasoline 30 years from now. He saw the value of using electric and digital technology to replicate the appeal of the R32 GT-R for future generations to experience.
Gun Grey metallic
At first glance, the R32 EV closely resembles the original R32 GT-R, with a Gun Grey metallic finish hiding the electric drive. To match the performance of the original 2.6-liter twin-turbo engine, the R32 EV is equipped with two 160 kW (218 hp) electric motors, each with 340 Nm of torque. A 62 kWh battery, taken from the Leaf Nismo RC02, is placed in the rear seat area. Although the R32 EV is about 370 kg heavier than the original, engineers tuned the power and torque to match the performance of the original GT-R, which produced 206 kW (280 hp) and 353 Nm of torque.
Monoblock calipers from the R35 GT-R
The R32 EV is equipped with a Nismo Sports suspension with Öhlins dampers to ensure optimal handling and minimal body movement, despite the additional weight of the EV components. In addition, larger brake discs and monoblock calipers from the R35 GT-R were installed for improved braking performance. To accommodate these larger brakes, special 18-inch wheels similar to the R32 GT-R’s original 16-inch rims have been developed.
Also updates for interior
The interior has been kept as original as possible, with upgrades where needed. The standard seats have been replaced with custom-made Recaro seats. The dual DIN audio system, gauges and instrument panel feature high-definition digital screens that show essential driving information while maintaining their original look.

Paddle-shift functionality
To mimic the sensory experience of the R32 GT-R, the team added paddle-shift functionality and a cabin speaker that produces sound inspired by the original RB26DETT engine sound. They even programmed the feeling of shock when shifting gears into the paddle-shift logic, simulating the brief jolt a driver experiences when operating the clutch and shifting through a mechanical gearbox.
Nissan’s master test driver Hiroyoshi Kato
Building the R32 EV was a technically challenging process, but once all the components were carefully installed, it was time to test the driving experience. To do this, the team enlisted Nissan’s master test driver Hiroyoshi Kato. Kato is one of Nissan’s most experienced test drivers and was involved in the development of the original R32 GT-R at the time, prior to its launch in 1989. His knowledge and experience with the original model made him the perfect person to evaluate the electric version.
During his test drives, Kato took a seat behind the wheel of the R32 EV and provided valuable feedback to the project team. His input was vital in ensuring that the electric powertrain would retain the essence of the R32 GT-R. Although handling inevitably differed from the original due to the extra weight and EV components, Kato’s expertise helped fine-tune the car’s balance and response.
No production plans
While there are no plans to offer the R32 EV commercially or develop a conversion kit, the project provides valuable insights for future EV developments. This project shows that with passion and innovation, the soul of an iconic car can be preserved, even in an electric future.
